Nutri-Score: At a Glance Nutrition

Understand this A-E food label to make informed nutritional choices.

What is Nutri-Score?

Nutri-Score is a front-of-pack nutrition label that converts the nutritional value of food and beverages into a simple, easy-to-understand score. It uses a color-coded scale from A (green, best nutritional quality)to E (red, poorest nutritional quality).

How is Nutri-Score Calculated?

The calculation is based on a scientific algorithm that considers both 'negative' and 'positive' elements per 100g or 100ml of product:

Elements that Increase Score (towards E)
  • Energy Density (Calories)
  • Saturated Fats
  • Sugars
  • Salt (Sodium)
Elements that Decrease Score (towards A)
  • Protein Content
  • Dietary Fiber
  • Fruits, Vegetables, Nuts & Legumes
  • Certain Oils (e.g., rapeseed, walnut, olive)

A final score is calculated by subtracting the sum of positive points from the sum of negative points. This score then corresponds to a letter grade.

How to Use Nutri-Score:

Nutri-Score is most effective for comparing similar products within the same category. For example, when choosing between two breakfast cereals or two frozen pizzas, the one with the better Nutri-Score (closer to A) is generally the healthier option.

Limitations:

While helpful, Nutri-Score doesn't tell the whole story. It doesn't account for all micronutrients, processing levels (beyond some basic categorizations), or portion sizes. It's a tool to guide choices, not a complete dietary plan. Always consider it as part of a balanced diet.
